Joey Lehrer is a movement teacher, somatic practitioner and improvisational performance artist. He is a respected and key member of the Australian CI community as a teacher, writer and performer of the form – having taught extensively across Australia and New Zealand, both open workshops and at tertiary institutions. Dancing from an early age, Joey began CI seriously in 2001 – and hasn’t looked back since! He has studied with State of Flux, Rinske Ginsberg, Helen Clarke Lapin, Martin Keogh & Ray Chung.

In recent years, Joey has been a core member of the organising team for the Australian Contact Improvisation Convergence, ACIC, and is currently a co-editor of Proximity magazine. He teaches regular CI classes at Studio 202, where he is also a Pilates Practioner and Remedial Massage Therapist. Pierre Mathieu
Montreal, Quebec , Canada

Pierre’s passion for dance and human movement probably started in his parent’s loving dance while still an embryo!
a practitionner of Martial arts from a young age (Judo, then Karaté then Ch’ien Lung KungFu) Pierre moved as fluidly on land as in water his first realm of exploration of the “expansion” of his sense of connexion with nature and consciousness. Explorations into team and “contact” sports like hockey, american football, volleyBall and shortly Rugby awakened his desire for creative connectedness to himself, his teammates and the “field of play”. A canadian Trampoline champion, he soon became driven by a constant urge to defy gravity and to find new ways of moving and dancing through life. A short stint as a Naval officer tought him to further dare thinking of the box and to value clear communications and the rewards of patience and perseverance. It’s then in the early 80’s While was studying BioMechanics and Massage therapy that he discovered Contact improvisation.

THe exploration has never stopped since … dancing on stage, in public performances, in hospital settings to rehabilitate the desire of dancing and moving that is innate to all living beings… Choreographing, scoring and/or orchestrating various dance events and rituals…
Pierre has taken Contact Improvisation to kindergardens, schools, colleges, inside the work place to explore it’s potential as an ongoing , enriching dialogue with one self or amongst humans and their environment. Pierre has taught CI in private or group lessons, has been a movement facilitator with professional dancers and athletes as well as many people simply desiring to have more dance in their lives…. and more life in their dance…

Heike Kuhlmann teaches dance and movement for adults and kids for more than 13 years. Just in 1998 I discovered CI when I was taking released based technique classes with Stephanie Maher. Since that I took plenty of classes, workshops with many different teachers. For some years I integrated parts of CI in my dance and movement classes. In 2007 than I started to teach it pureley and name it. I like to combine BMC and Contact Improvisation using the BMC principles for discovering the bodys possibility in movement and expression as well as for repatterning. Still I integrate other bits into the CI classes from my dancer´s and movement therapist background.

On one hand I realized how much a somatic approach helps people to come into a satisfying dance. How much they discover about themselves and what that changes their dance with a partner, but also how much a body awareness gives benefits to their life. On the other hand I am very much interested in the performative and virtuous aspect of CI. So I like to bring in contemporary dance techniques, impro exercises and scores into the classes, so that the participants can artistically express themselves.

Starting of with a university degree in Physical Education and Biology, I studied Dance Pedagogy with Leanore Ickstadt and did my MA in Choreography. For the Diploma in Integrative Bodywork & Movement Therapy (DiplIBMT), I studied deeply Body-Mind Centering and Authentic Movement.

2011 I worked as dancer in the piece „On the way to immortality“, was part of the Organization of the first Global Water Dances Berlin and the PHYINXperformancesalon.

In 2010 I taught at the Easter Improfestival in Göttingen and at Transcontact in Cluj Napoca.

In 2009/2010 I was invited to the first Contact Festival in Florianopolis, Brasil.

I also create my own performances. In our last colloborational we worked work on weather and climate change. This was shown in Berlin, june 2009. The further development of it was shown in May 2010.

In 2008 she developped collobpartively the performance installation „Nirgendland“. choreographed „Dancing on water“ and danced at the Masdanca festival- Gran Canaria. In 2007 she won the Berlin price of violence prevention for creation a dancetheatre school project on violence through fairytales.

In 2006 she created the solo „To be looked at“ for the conference „Slavery in Contemporary Arts – Trauma, Memory and Visuality“. An article about that performance has been published in „Slavery in Art and Literature (2010).

Ann fell in love with Contact Improvisation in 2010, while she was studying contemporary dance, improvisation and composition in Oslo, Norway. Since then she has been engulfed in somatic movement practices and exploration, performing, teaching and dancing in Norway, Greece, India, Argentina, and various countries in Europe. At the same time Contact Improvisation has been an ongoing love story and a teacher, a place to explore what is. The playfulness, honesty, connection with other dancers, the wisdom in the body, and the joy of movement is what brings her back to the dancefloor, again and again.

The rich language of images that he uses in teaching combine worlds and approaches using humor, sensitivity, independent discovery and the expression of movement and its performance.

In 2005 he founded Artness. In 2009 the school was founded in Kibbutz Ein Shemer and in 2010 the school moved to its present home, which included a modern studio, a theatre-gallery and the houses of culture and performance were founded.

Artness is a unique language of work and creation that is based on movement, improvisation and multi-disciplinary work which combines the arts of movement, visual theater and dance, visual and digital arts and music alongside elements of research and practice in movement as a way for self-development and empowerment, both personal and within society. Today, Artness is a house of modern culture and a unique and leading school in the field of inter-disciplinary art as a language of the creation of art, and as a tool of cultural development. The unique creative language which developed over a period of years is characterized by interdisciplinary thought and action, supported by proficiency in a wide range of performance tools: movement, space, stage design, costumes, sound, and direction, and an emphasis on the in-depth investigation by the independent performer of his tools.

Lior Ophir
Herzlia, Israel

Lior Ophir (Israel) is a Dancer, Improviser, Performance Artist, Musician, Shiatsu therapist, Engineer, Teacher, Student.
Born 1971. After years of working in the field of engineering, I met with the dance that changed my life.
Since the late 90’s Lior practices and explores various forms of movement, dance, body/mind and awareness, including: Improvisation, Contact Improvisation, Butoh, Contemporary Dance, Shiatsu Therapy, Yoga, Vipassana Meditation, Tai-Qi, Qi-Kong. His performance work and teaching are influenced by these disciplines.
Lior has been performing in solo works as well as in collaborations with various artists, in theaters, galleries and in the public space, in Israel and throughout the world.
He has been teaching in Israel, Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, Brasil, and more.
Co-founder of the Israeli CI Association, co-organizer of the Israeli CI festival, and founder of several other festivals and ensembels.
Had worked, collaborated and danced with some of the great dancers and teachers such as Yoshito Ohno, Arye Burstein, Nancy Starks-smith, Julian Hamilton, Juan Cruz-Diaz, Nita Little, Frey Faust, Mirva Makinnen and many others.
Lior currently lives in the little village of Udim in Israel, cares for his vegetable garden, teaches and performs.
You can see him dancing:

In my teaching today I look for a relaxed and awake state in the body and mind in the dance. I am influenced, among other things, by Release and Klein Techniques in search for a released physical state in movement and using our structure in an easy and efficient way, an understanding and work with the physical forces that work on us. I like to invite and allow the personal/authentic dance of each one, the meeting, and the pleasure in dancing.

In my performance work today I am investigating Improvisation and Contact Improvisation as performance art, exploring the whole range between physical and emotional. Specifically curious how can I fill an empty space – alone and with a group, How can I fine-tune myself as performer to get closer to the “human-string” that vibrates in all of us so the personal/authentic journey of the performer invites the audience to share the journey, to be touched and ultimately to change.

Performance artist in the field of Dance & Contact Improvisation. I studied Dance and theater Improvisation in Israel at “Hakvuza beyafo” and “play school for Improvisation”. After finishing my studies I moved to Amsterdam where I had the privilege to work, learn and be inspired by great teachers of dance and contact Improvisation – Paulien de Groot, David Zambrano and Karl Frost amongst others.

In the last years I perform and give workshops on the technique of Improvisation in Dance and Contact. A couple of years ago I chose Amsterdam as my base and co founded with 5 other performance artists the group – Mono Collective that performs anchored and open improvisation pieces as well as choreographed pieces.

For me, Improvisation is a way of life and I try to take it out of the studio into everyday life. I believe that the core of man spirit comes from new experiences, and that it is much more important to be open and present, than to make plans and try to stick to them.

Loby works as an improvisation practitioner, exploring life through creative expressions and impulses. At the age of 7 he played the piano through improvisation. This innerrhythm found its new way through movement in the fields of breakdance and theatre which was also based on freestyle improvisations.

Loby joined several theatregroups. Through these influences and experiences, he co-started a new group and works as an artistic director and performer at the Theatregroup Vreemdwild and collaborated with the students of the art academy AKI ( Academie voor Kunst en Industrie) nowadays the ArtEZ Academie voor Art & Design Enschede.

Loby travelled and joined classes/ jamsessions/ festivals to discover more about Contact Improvisation in Hongkong ( Kongtact Square身隨意舞) , Budapest (SIN & Kontakt Budapest) , Berlin (k77), Krakow, Groningen (Random Collision) and Amsterdam.

His curiosity about the human movement made him practicing Aikido.
He set up Kahbam to combine all the different perspectives of movements and offer this space at Kahbam to share experiences.

weekly CI-classes in Anamorphic Studio in Amsterdam, at DanceMoves in Leiden, and at CLOUD/dance-lab in Den Haag , classes and workshops in the Netherlands in Rotterdam, Delft, Den Haag, Leiden, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, Eindhoven, ...mostly Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland , Netherlands

As a dancer I am richly inspired by other fields of knowledge; I studied architecture and some philosophy and have worked in architecture …and I still sometimes work in architecture related fine-arts.
I love how especially CI teaches me about the body, myself, other people, the world.

Taking and giving workshops and classes I see as a learning together.
I gave dance courses for the VAK in Delft, and for the New Dance Centre and CLOUD/Dancelab in Den Haag and the LAK-theatre in Leiden, where I still occasionally work.
I am in the regular teacher-pool of the Amsterdam Jam, the Rotterdam Jam, and DanceMoves Leiden, plus sometimes also give workshops at other jams and places in the Netherlands and everywhere, and I am originator and organiser of the international Amsterdam 4-day CI-Weekends.
Since 2009 I (co-)organize and teach at events in the Netherlands and abroad.

Grass Valley, CA 95945 USA

I host/facilitate/teach a weekly class and jam in Grass Valley, CA in the Sierra Foothills, which I've been leading since Fall of 2005. We have a wonderful, warm-hearted group of about 20, but only about 6-12 show up on any given night, mixed levels. I also bring out-of-town teachers in to lead weekend workshops, and I'm available to travel and teach workshops. I've been studying CI since something like 1989, always learning and growing and loving it, and bringing in elements from other movement studies. In my teaching I present CI as an art/dance form, an awareness practice, a tool for self-revelation and self-change, and a source of endless fun and discovery. My teaching focuses on deepening into the practice of CI through cultivating awareness, sensitivity, technique and individual exploration. I would love to teach at festivals or do a workshop in your community.

I’m a music composer, live-loop ambient artist, a multi-instrumentalist who works with creatives across several mediums weaving a tapestry of sound and music into the fabric of each unique creation I participate in.

Based in Los Angeles, CA I compose music for film, theater, and advertising. I often perform live with CI Los Angeles and other CI groups throughout SoCal including Long Beach CI Jam, Eastside Jam (Pasadena), and UCLA.

While mostly I work collaboratively with other teachers and facilitators, I have experience facilitating jams and I am available to lead a group interested in exploring contact improv.

Genres: Ambient, Blues, Classical, Electronic, Jazz Sacred, World

I’m currently open to opportunities anywhere in the World to perform and provide music for contact improv dance groups. I’m also developing a dance music film inspired by contact improv and the music that I’ve been sharing along the journey. Thank you for reading. If you or anyone you know has an interest in anything I’m working on please feel free to get in touch.

Paula Byrne is the product of a jazz drummer (father) and figure skater (mother). She spent her early years in ballet and modern dance, working as a professional dancer from 1981 to 1989. She left the dance world at the ripe old age of 27, realizing that a career based on expertise and appearance was short-lived.

It would be many years before she found dance again, this time, her own natural movement. She stumbled upon ecstatic dance in 1995 at Breitenbush Hot Springs, where Vinn Marti was hosting a workshop. That weekend changed her life forever. She knew she had found her calling and began her path as a movement teacher. She studied extensively with Gabrielle Roth and core 5Rhythms teachers and apprenticed with Vinn Marti from 1996 to 2002.

Paula was an Oracle Developer in the high-tech field for 20 years. She left that career in 2005 to devote herself full-time to her soul-work in assisting people to remember and reconnect to the body as a source of wisdom, pleasure and joy in the present moment.

Paula is the creator of OneDance™, a moving meditation based on the 7 chakras, and leads classes and workshops in Wild Grace™, Soul Motion, Contact Improv, Authentic Movement and Blindfolded Trance Dance. She is Owner and Director of SomaSpace, offering her studio to artists, dancers, writers, musicians and creatives as place to practice and present their craft.

I am an experimental dance artist, inspired by my studies of new dance, dance-theater, contact improvisation, and butoh. I'm also a bodyworker and use healing practices, such as body-mind centering, yoga and feldenkrais, as a source of creativity, inspiration and physical training. I research extended dance techniques, which are unique movements, individual to my particular body. I also develop teaching methods to help other dancers find their own extended techniques. Dance is a social art form and I'm a promiscuous collaborator. I'm mostly known for my collaborations with avant-garde musicians, particularly my duo with Andy Hayleck (When We're Older), but I also work with other dance, theater and visual artists. I have choreographed over 15 original dance works, and am also an avid improviser. I'm currently practicing free improvisation: dances without any predetermined plan. My work is always site-specific in that I seek to activate and enliven all spaces that I dance in, whether they are theaters, studios, homes, places of business or the outdoors. I also seek to connect audience members to their own embodied, corporeal experience with the immediacy and spontaneity of improvisation.

investigating ci since the mid 80s, i am still engaged and interested. what a fascinating journey it has been thus far. i teach ci at juniata college, where ci36 took place, and also enjoy traveling to teach, perform and dance at festivals. of course i have favorite partners, but isnt it wonderful when you have a great dance with someone you just met and will never see again? what a marvelous universal language. while in the moment of a dance, i feel like i am on the inside of physics—attuned, alert, and calm all at once, and yet there is something distinctly alive about the intimacy of even small, private shifts.

Barbara Tait
Blacksburg, VA 24060 USA

Barbara Tait began studying contact improvisation with John Gamble in 2007 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and that training is still the primary informer of her approach to CI. She flickered in and out of the CI scene in Philadelphia, PA during the 5 years she lived there, and was fortunate enough to take class and jam with many wonderful practitioners. She recently attended a weekend intensive with Nancy Stark Smith in Washington, D.C. She currently resides in Blacksburg, VA where she and her collaborator Rachel Rugh teach CI.
