The Montreal contact improvisation dance community has set up a formal (and let’s admit it: legally incorporated) structure to preserve that fragile, precious moment when anything seemed possible. This structure is the Association de contact improvisation.

In its formal dimension, the Association is composed of members who come together annually in a general meeting to elect a board of directors, ratify any changes to the general guidelines, and approve the financial statements.

In its intuitive dimension, the Association expresses a hope of solidarity and harmony arising from the regular practice of contact improvisation.

The mission of the Association of Contact Improvisation (ACI) consists of: assembling individuals to support an artistic community project, adequately representing its membership before concerned parties, promoting contact improvisation dance through education, research and performance, developing the practice of contact improvisation and broadening its accessibility to the public.

Kathleen Rea, former dancer with the National Ballet Company of Canada, Ballet Jorgen Canada and Tirolerlandes Theatre (Austria), founded REAson d'être dance productions in 2000. Directed by Kathleen Rea, its mandate is to create and produce dance events that use dance, vocalization, text and physical theatre to express the human condition. The company highlights the creative work of Kathleen Rea and other artists. REAson d'être dance productions also strives to teach and inspire the public about dance through education projects, and provides experience for young dancers. Another unique feature is that Rea values senior dance artists as much as young dancers. She is inspired by the generational story telling and themes possible with a dance company that spans many ages.

REAson d'être dance productions has produced four main stage works choreographed by Kathleen Rea: Fleeting, Marrow, Ire and Long Live. Another memorable event was the co-production of Lapinthrope, a dance film choreographed by Rea. Lapinthrope was screened at 14 international film festivals and won best long-short film at the Festival Der Nationen (Austrian film festival). REAson d'être dance productions also produced Close Knit for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2007, which was performed outdoors throughout the night and involved a 30 foot long piece of knitting. REAson d'être dance productions has co-production credits with Decadence Films, the Chimera Project, Kaeja d’Dance, the Parkdale BIA and princess productions.

Most recelty REAson d'etre dance productions' Long Live was nominated for three Dora Mavor Moore awards, Outstanding Choreography for Kathleen Rea, Outstanding Dance Performance for Karen Kaeja and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition for Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman

Artness: A Home and School for the Art of Movement and Its Performance

Artness, founded in 2005 by Shahar Dor, and located in Kibbutz Ein Shemer, is a place for movement artists, audiences and community, in which to study, create and perform. Participants come from all over the world.

“Artness is the connection of art to life, the expression of belief and practice. I see the artist as the human being who is connected to the fire of knowledge and life, and art as originating in core sources and being expressed in never-ending ways.”

“Movement and the Art of Performance are powerful tools for the discovery and expression of the self; of what we are, and what we are living. The willingness to come close to and touch the hot inner core is the key to discovery of the treasure, the doorway to the other, the invitation of the miracle. The necessary ingredients are a love of movement, practice, patience, availability, attention, all over time. The tools are the body, the heart and thought.”
Shahar Dor, Artistic Director, Artness

The School, first and foremost a demanding artistic framework, trains dancers, creators and performers, while allowing them to develop as people and artists who can lead themselves, their art and their surroundings, with curiosity and creativity to new and rich places of inspiration and doing.

The Artness vocabulary is that of body, the awareness of movement and the art of image creating. It is the result of many years of research, creativity and the search for ways of varied expression of a common and inclusive language; in philosophy and practice, in performance, in directing and teaching.

Studies expose the student to a wide variety of experiences aimed at achieving technique and work methodology, discovering their core sources, finding and developing their specific language and voice, and a personal and indelible style as creators and performers.

Artness is also distinct in its physical campus and locality, located in a cooperative agricultural community, made up of small buildings and nature. The experience of attending Artness is therefore a total experience – of life, life within a creative environment, creating a dialogue between life and art.

Tumblebones is a group of 7 people who are passionately committed to CI as a practice for exploring and expanding our humanness. Working with the principles of CI as a base for our physical practice, we incorporate elements of dance improvisation and composition, and theater. What thrills us is dancing, dancing together. We consistently explore CI, which is for us simultaneously athletic and artistic. Our “mission” is to explore the core principles of CI, to nurture our evolving friendships, and to delight in the gifts that build from dancing regularly. Moving together year after year has deepened our way of working, refined our interests, and established a container for exploring our “one wild and precious life.”

MARYLAND
Iron Rainbow Dance Theatre
Curious Palace, 126 S. Arlington , Baltimore, MD 21223 USA

is a new multimedia collective based in Baltimore, Maryland. Collective artists meet regularly to train and experiment, toward empathy through performance not only toward collaborative projects, but also in their own mediums. Training in Authentic Movement and Contact Improvisation is the base of support on which these core members meet. The way these movement forms support individual and interpersonal growth enliven our artists and our community to further commune with self and therefore encourage our audiences to do the same. Collective Artists delve into the questions like: How can we encourage audiences to look with in themselves and their experience? How can we encourage our audience to be witness to their emotions? How can we employ empathy as a revolutionary act?
