Salt Spring Island, British Columbia v8k1y4, Canada

Join us, on Salt Spring Island, Canada, for a week-long intensive training in Contact Improvisation Dance
with Anjelika Doniy (Russia) and Martin Keogh
December 29, 2018 – January 4, 2019

Website: https://www.contactimprovisationsaltspring.com/
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/248812869182173/

What do we need in place to trust this moment of the dance? Contact Improvisation requires a courageous willingness — but never so much as when we dance in the absence of will – those moments when we drop the reins and, nowhere bound, allow our animal to carry us.

We’ll research the questions:
• What is visible, predictable, teachable?
• What is hidden, unpredictable and unteachable?
• Can we see a jam as an art work in progress?
• How does a witness influence a dancer? And how does a dancer influence a witness?

We will work together six hours a day. Other activities will include jams, potlucks, and spontaneous surprises. We want to get to know you—your treasures, your idiosyncrasies, your distinctive pathways into Contact Improvisation. We will start with ourselves and return to ourselves through dance, skills, awareness, attention, silence.

The format:
Three days of investigation and dancing (Dec 29-30-31)
One day for rest, integration and laundry (Jan 1)
Three more days to deepen the material (Jan 2-3-4)

Because of the advanced nature of this workshop, this intensive is for those with a solid grasp of Contact fundamentals gathered through both classes and jam.

All in Canadian dollar

$420 – Economically deprived, students and underemployed.
$455 – Economically challenged: artists, farmers etc..
$495 – Professional rate: Happily sustained, supports the art.

Dancing Souls: an invitation to live and dance on the pulse of the desert, to meet it in its vastness.
Yoga and guided meditations will bring us into a state of deeper presence, awakening the body and bringing the mind into the moment and in harmony with the silence of the surroundings.

We will engage ourselves in a sensory and playful approach toward our environment. Well rooted in the ground and in the sensitive qualities of our dances, alone or in dialogue with partners, we will go on an inward journey through our internal impulses, sometimes subtle, sometimes wild, to explore the resonance of our body landscapes in tune with the natural surroundings.

Contact Improvisation is based on a natural exchange of weight, a fluid and organic common movement and a listening, subtle touch.

Manuela Blanchard (Switzerland) is a dancer and WATSU®, WaterDance® & Esalen Massage® practicioner. She teaches improvised dance: New Dance and Contact improvisation, in water and in nature. Her listening and subtle presence invites you to a full and confident immersion in the mouvement. More here.

Cornelia Held (Switzerland) is a YS Yoga teacher, Breath- & Movement therapist, Cranio-Sacral Therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She dances since more than 20 years Contactimprovisation, since many years Butoh and she has a yearslong experience in meditation (Vipassana). She’s leading groups in the maroccan desert since 5 years. More here.

Place: Desert in Marocco / in the sand dunes in the entrance of Sahara. One day (bus and then 1h30 hike with camels) from Marrakech. Camp in the middle of the sand dunes sleeping on matresses in tents, dry closets, very simple showers, outdoor dances in silence.

Price: 470€ with your registration until end of December 2018 / 520€ beyond. Reduced fee for people with small income, please contact us.

Not included (please contact us for details and support for all arrangements): flight to Marrakech (about 140-350€, the earliest the cheapest), to book by yourself, minibus to M’Hamid 70€, 2 nights in a hotel in Marrakech at your arrival and departure (about 10€ x2 nights), full pension in the heart of the desert – 6 nights + 1 one the way in a Riad – alltogether 260€.

Pura Vida!

As your host and teacher I bring 30 years of CI experience to share. Based in Massachusetts, I’ve taught and performed across USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Europe and Israel. This will be my 8th year teaching in Costa Rica! Over the last 10 years in my desire to integrate communication and intimacy skills in teaching and life I have studied Non-violent communication, Tantra, Butoh, Byron Katie’s “The Work” and most recently Betty Martin’s “Wheel of Consent”. I have been both a teacher and a board member at Earthdance Retreat Center in Plainfield, MA where I currently direct the Touch&Play Festival. I am a featured dancer in Sanford Lewis’ documentary film about CI “An Intimate Dance.” I also design and moderate the international Contact Improv resource website www.contactimprov.com.

Moti’s intensive was hands down the best contact dance intensive I have ever taken. Moti was able to create a space where community could flourish and where we were able to explore ourselves at so many levels. Contact dance was the vehicle through which we delved deeper into ourselves and what in means to be in community with each other. I cannot recommend his teaching enough.
- Rosemary Macadam (Toronto, Canada)

This Retreat was an absolute highlight in my over 30 years on again off again CI dance life. Moti is a sensei, a true master teacher, who has fed my love for CI on a very deep level and has brought out new curiosities and inner explorations into my being a CI practitioner, who wants to see this form spread to the edges of the earth.
- Cornelia Hoehle, (USA/Germany)

The combination of a paradise jungle/ocean location and Moti’s loving, experienced teaching made this a contact improv dancer’s dream.
- Bobby Dolan, (MA, USA)

Moti’s classes were always engaging and challenging without pushing me to wear out my aging body! Thanks for attuned pacing that seemed to work well for the younger bodies as well.
- Beth Dennison (MA, USA)

Moti’s CI workshop has been one of my favorite CI expeditions, and I would love to go again! The diverse array of offerings, and being in a beautiful jungle with amazing CI dancers from Costa Rica/Central America, you are always in a dance of inter-connectedness, not just with bodies, but with nature (even the jungle sounds), and culture! Magical, playful, delightful…mmm!

- Virginia Delbino (Tinamastes, Costa Rica)

Brussels, Brussels , Belgium

Steve Paxton’s visit to Brussels is a precious opportunity to meet this dancer, choreographer and teacher whose work has been of such influence in the world contemporary dance and who continues to inspire generations of dancers and choreographers today. Steve Paxton’s presence is in response to the invitation from Contredanse to celebrate 15 years of collaboration that have led to the release of Paxton’s first book Gravity and its French translation La gravité as well as Material for the Spine, a movement study, now available online. The event Swimming in Gravity will be governed by gravity and our relationship to this physical force – the central theme of Steve Paxton’s work.

In collaboration with several cultural venues in Brussels, the program includes an exhibition, a lecture by Steve Paxton as well as a round table, within the LEGS festival, on inheritance and transmission. To complete the week, a series of workshops and times for exchange will be organized at La Raffinerie and at the TICTAC art center. Like an outstretched hand, this event is an invitation to enter the dance, with Steve Paxton.

Swimming in Gravity – Lecture by Steve Paxton – 25/03 – 20:00

BOZAR – Horta Hall with Steve Paxton

Steve Paxton’s conference at BOZAR celebrates the recent publication with Éditions Contredanse of his first book Gravity. In it, he looks back on a life inhabited by this natural physical force, and the memories of his first steps run alongside metaphysical meditations and views on the present-day world. With lucidity and humour, Steve Paxton investigates what is at the bounds of our conscience, and invites our senses to enter into the dance.

Fridays 6:30-8pm (please arrive between 6:05-6:25pm)
at EDAM Dance

[No class Feb 15 – instead join us at the 4th Annual Vancouver Contact Improv Festival (Feb 15-17 @ SFU Woodwards)]

Olivia’s classes offer an opportunity to develop Contact Improvisation (CI) techniques that will both foster the dancing of beginners and satisfy the hunger of more advanced practitioners.

Class will begin with a guided warm-up to deepen awareness of ourselves in relationship to gravity by sensing the balance between tension and ease. Developmental movement principles such as yielding, head-tail connection, and push patterns will be considered to facilitate pathways that move us in and out of the floor with ease and efficiency. We will travel through space utilizing “scores of limitation” to create opportunities to unlearn habitual patterning to enrich the possibilities of our dancing.

As we begin to improvise together we will discover the innate physics in our movements, using gravity as a tool rather than a hindrance. Similarly, by learning to gently pour our weight we notice how timing can allow for easeful movements. We will consider the notion of physical empathy, exploring how we can make ourselves light and supportive in surrendering to weight flow and counterbalance.

Join us for a 3 day immersion in Jamming Contact Improvisation Dance. There will be little facilitation but a clear container. We will be pulling inspirations from different scores and themes like the Underscore, Blindfold Jams, Authentic Movements, Music Jam, Lab and other formats.

Our intention is to dive into long jamming sessions where time evaporates into a spacious container. We have interest in allowing our natural internal rhythms to guide us into unknown and spontaneous pathways. We will be our own and each others teachers, guides and investigators.

This event is inclusive to all skill levels, ages, genders, sexual orientations, skin colours & physical conditions.

Starting with contact as our foundation, we’ll traject towards a space that supports freedom of flight and expression: expression that takes us into interaction and ensemble improvisation. That is: we start at zero to redefine what is contact—to ourselves, others, reality, gravity. We start at zero to connect with our bodies, our interest and spontaneity.

Some notions: We will decode momentum to ride moving support — riding momentum is about letting go without being out-of–control. We’ll track flying centers of gravity to find aerial interactions that increase the contact.
I like to inject some body systems material (BMC, Alexander Technique and bodywork). For example: Jumping ≠ Flying because jumping is a muscular action, whereas flying is in the bones and is affected greatly by emotions and attitude.

Some of the techniques that will be tought are: ‘flying patterns’ (lifts, how to spring, how to jump, how to fly), ‘fluid acrobatics’ (actobatics in movement), ‘pure contact’(contact improvisation basics). For the acrobatic and advanced patterns everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust – everyone will do something new. We will learn some repertory and practice taking the aerial work into improv. I like feedback and will see what the group is up for.

We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics and deft maneuvers. We’ll be doing my favorite contact exercises and current curiosities—created or learned over the decades of investigation and indulgence. We use these to warm up, center and to re-enter the “beginner’s mind” of contact improvisation. We will practice integrating the flying and acrobatics into the contact flow. That is: aerial interactions that increase the contact. We will take the aerial work into improvisation FLYING SCORES.

BIO Scott Wells:

In 1981 Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He stuck with both, received an MFA in dance from the University of Illinois (1991) and currently directs a company in San Francisco. Scott Wells & Dancers is celebrating 25 years of making dances in San Francisco. Wells has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University. In 2010 and 2005 Scott received the Izzie (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award) for Outstanding Choreography and was selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”. In 2016 Wells choreographed Touchy Subjects with Keith Hennessy and in 2017 choreographed On the Occasion of our 25th Anniversary (and eviction) we ask, “Was that good for you?” with Kathleen Hermesdorf. Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty five years and BMC for fifteen.
Scott’s style of contact is athletic and emphasizes freedom of movement, flying, fluid acrobatics (easy to advanced), safety, precision, pleasure and technique. What students often like best in Scott’s classes is the variance between meditative, playful, and very physical dancing. And students appreciate how the scary or advanced moves are safe, relaxed and made possible.

“Scott Wells…has a dizzying abundance of pure dance-making talent“ Rachel Howard, SF Examiner

“Wells has become over the last fifteen years the Paul Taylor of Contact Improv — that is, the first to make dances in this idiom that are deeply musical, somehow “normal,” imaginative, witty, often hilarious, sometimes fierce.” Paul Parrish, Danceviewtimes

“Come for the Thrills, Stay for the Artistry.” Allan Ulrich, Voice of Dance

“Sproing! Once you adjust to the notion that very fit people are supposed to be bouncing off walls and flying in your face, you can relax and let them (Wells and dancers) do their thing, which is an electrifying style of contact improvisation” SF Weekly

2-day dance workshop in London with renowned choreographer Scott Wells

1-2 June 2019, Sat 11-6pm; Sun 10-4pm

During these two days, we will start with contact and body awareness. Then learn some techniques and traject towards a space that supports freedom of flight and expression.

We’ll be doing Scott’s favourite contact exercises and current curiosities created or learned over the decades of investigation and indulgence.

We will practice flying, catching, landing, fluid acrobatics, deft manoeuvres. For the acrobatics everyone will work at their own level and will learn best by building group safety and trust: everyone will do something new.

We will practice taking the aerial work into improv: come, lose your head and fly!

Call of the wild

In 1981 Scott discovered the pleasure of contact improvisation shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He stuck with both and currently directs a company in San Francisco and tours annually to Europe. Wells has created works for skateboarders, boxers and recently choreographed West Side Story.

He teaches dance technique and is recognized worldwide as a leading teacher of Contact Improvisation. He has recently taught and performed in Ankara, Turkey, Halifax, Canada, at Impultanz in Vienna, and in Budapest, Berlin, Graz, Munich and Rome.

Scott Wells is a two time winner of the Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Choreography.

My choreographic approach centers on physical interaction. I am fascinated with people as social creatures – how they play, fight, love and struggle in intimate pairings and in larger groups.

I view content as moment that spice the form and flow of a work. I am concerned with the larger picture – the arc, pace and overall structure. Even the humor in dances has an effect on the flow of the work’ ~ Scott Wells

Arlequi - Mas Llapart, Barri Sant Maurici, Camos, Girona, Banyoles E17840, Spain

A workshop for experienced contact improvisers that engages the full spectrum of dance improvisation work that Nancy and Mike are currently exploring using Contact Improvisation (CI) as a base. This includes CI technique and practice, improvisation scores (including the Underscore), compositional awareness (including Mike’s 86 Aspects of Composition), contemplation, discussion, jamming, and detailed listening practice.

Through our moving and observing, we will study physical and energetic changes in state, accidental (and deliberate) composition, presence, and relationship—in groups, solo, in and out of contact, with and without live music.

We’ll experiment with ways to tune our dancing and awareness so we can improvise more consistently with ease and clarity—embodied, articulate, generous, ready for CI and solo and group relationships, artful, and human. In the workshop we will also develop our listening, aiming to find varied relationships between what we hear and how we move.

Nancy’s longtime collaborator musician/composer/improviser Mike Vargas will contribute his music and his current research.

Please come preparedorgad.html for intensive practice (6 hours daily) and a little bit of fun!

The course is designed for people with intermediate/advanced level experience in contact improvisation. Please send a brief description of your background with CI and improvisation and your specific interest in this course. Please send directly to Nancy at contactq@aol.com, or fax # 001-413-586-9055.

The workshop will be taught in English. Some fluency (understanding and speaking) in English required.

Course Fee: 535.– Euros
includes accommodation on the hayloft
For food please calculate approx. 17.-€ per day

This event is for dancers with a solid grasp in the form of contact improvisation. Please message us if you have doubt.

The format:
• Three days of investigation and dancing from 10am- 4:30pm
• One day for rest for integration and laundry
• Three more days to deepen the material

We will work together five to six hours a day. Other activities will include jams, potlucks, and spontaneous surprises. We want to get to know you—your treasures, your idiosyncrasies, your distinctive pathways into contact improvisation.
Attending a weeklong training allows the group to establish working relationships, and provides the opportunity for everyone to receive feedback and create significant changes in their dancing
Because of the advanced nature of this workshop, this intensive is for those with a solid grasp of Contact fundamentals.
