Studio Crearte, Mühlenplatz 15, Bern , Switzerland

…. 4 weekends plus 4 days optional: immersing – exploring – understanding – enjoying – dancing – progressing .…

This advanced training addresses participants with a solid base in CI and the interest to dive deep into this dance form within the frame of an ongoing group. The goal is to explore the field of movement technique, improvisation and jamming, to progress individually and to get a better understanding of the dynamic and the complexity of CI as a group.

Dancing Souls: an invitation to live and dance on the pulse of the desert, to meet it in its vastness.
Yoga and guided meditations will bring us into a state of deeper presence, awakening the body and bringing the mind into the moment and in harmony with the silence of the surroundings.

We will engage ourselves in a sensory and playful approach toward our environment. Well rooted in the ground and in the sensitive qualities of our dances, alone or in dialogue with partners, we will go on an inward journey through our internal impulses, sometimes subtle, sometimes wild, to explore the resonance of our body landscapes in tune with the natural surroundings.

Contact Improvisation is based on a natural exchange of weight, a fluid and organic common movement and a listening, subtle touch.

Manuela Blanchard (Switzerland) is a dancer and WATSU®, WaterDance® & Esalen Massage® practicioner. She teaches improvised dance: New Dance and Contact improvisation, in water and in nature. Her listening and subtle presence invites you to a full and confident immersion in the mouvement. More here.

Cornelia Held (Switzerland) is a YS Yoga teacher, Breath- & Movement therapist, Cranio-Sacral Therapist, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She dances since more than 20 years Contactimprovisation, since many years Butoh and she has a yearslong experience in meditation (Vipassana). She’s leading groups in the maroccan desert since 5 years. More here.

Place: Desert in Marocco / in the sand dunes in the entrance of Sahara. One day (bus and then 1h30 hike with camels) from Marrakech. Camp in the middle of the sand dunes sleeping on matresses in tents, dry closets, very simple showers, outdoor dances in silence.

http://www.earthandwaterdance.com/desert-eng.html

Price: 470€ with your registration until end of November 2015 / 520€ in December, 600€ beyond. Reduced fee for people with small income, please contact us.

Not included (please contact us for details and support for all arrangements): flight to Marrakech (about 140-350€, the earliest the cheapest), to book by yourself, minibus to M’Hamid 70€, 2 nights in a hotel in Marrakech at your arrival and departure (about 10€ x2 nights), full pension in the heart of the desert – 6 nights + 1 one the way in a Riad – alltogether 260€.

Pura Vida!
Moti

TESTIMONIALS:

Moti’s intensive was hands down the best contact dance intensive I have ever taken. Moti was able to create a space where community could flourish and where we were able to explore ourselves at so many levels. Contact dance was the vehicle through which we delved deeper into ourselves and what in means to be in community with each other. I cannot recommend his teaching enough.
- Rosemary Macadam, Toronto, Canada

The combination of a paradise jungle/ocean location and Moti’s loving, experienced teaching made this a contact improv dancer’s dream.
- Bobby Dolan, Leverett, MA, USA

THE PERFORMANCE JAM
Workshop in Contact Improvisation & Performance Research
with SCOTT WELLS

February 26-28, 2016
Tanzfabrik Berlin

COST: Early bird 150€, thereafter 170€
REGISTRATION: For registration details and workshop questions please contact me by e-mail at xs4jan@gmx.de

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Scott: „My main work is as a choreographer and I rigorously investigate partnering and acrobatic movement ideas. This allows me to bring unique movement vocabulary and training to my workshops.“
We will also work with ensemble dancing. Dancing, contacting with connection and awareness of the group.
„I’d like to create an atmosphere that has more intention and group focus than a jam, but less stringent than a formal performance. We’ll develop our ensemble work and gain performance skills and resources. Contact Improvisation will be an element of our practice, an element to mix with soloing, ensemble and compositional work.“
We will take single elements (e.g. a flying skill) into scores. We will use this progression:
1) Connecting with yourself, using body sensations or images as they come up or the stories in your head. Noticing impulses to move, being able to feel your impulses, and pick which ones to follow.
2) Connecting with others (ensemble), awareness of others in the group. For example, if your working with levels, can you track the others’ levels as you move. Mirroring or copying others is one of our skills for this.
3) What is interesting to watch? Connecting with the watchers (audience). Do you sense what is interesting for them to see? Do you sense what place onstage will be psychologically dynamic OR make the picture of what is happening see-able. This is composition.
Scott Wells will support this score through teaching contemporary dance technique, improvisation, contact and partnering.
Scott’s style of contact is athletic and emphasizes freedom of movement, flying, fluid acrobatics (easy to advanced), safety, precision, pleasure and technique. What students often like best in Scott’s classes is the variance between the meditative, listening, slow and sensual dancing and the fun, playful, very physical dancing. And students appreciate how the scary or advanced moves are safe, relaxed and made possible.

BIO Scott Wells
Scott Wells discovered the pleasure of Contact Improvisation in 1981 shortly after becoming obsessed with the struggles of modern dance. He received his M.F.A. in Dance (the highest academic degree for dance) from the University of Illinois in 1991. During his university training Wells received the Creative and Performing Arts Fellowship, (University of Illinois), Martha Hill Award form the American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival Emerging Choreographer Commission. Scott Wells, Artistic Director of Scott Wells & Dancers, has created new works in San Francisco every year since 1992 and is known for his inventive and “electrifying” partnering. In 2010 and 2005 he received the Izzie, The Isadora Duncan Award for Outstanding Choreography (San Francisco’s most prestigious dance award). Scott has been selected by Dance Magazine as “one of the 25 To Watch”, received a GOLDIE (with Kathleen Hermesdorf) and the Lester Horton Award for Choreography (Los Angeles, 1995). He has taught at A.C.T, the San Francisco Conservatory for Dance and UC Berkeley and was an artist in residence at ODC Theater.
Wells has been practicing Alexander Technique for twenty five years and BMC for fifteen. He recently completed his certification in Radical Counseling. Scott has created works for skateboarders, for boxers and choreographed West Side Story for Sonoma State University.

Contact Improvisation Workshop in Tuscany, Italy
Casale Pundarika, Riparbella, Tuscany , Italy

Join us, Katrin (AT) and Ben (IRL), in the wonderful Casale Pundarika, a former meditation centre surrounded by natural forest, olive groves and vineyards, offering independent apartments and healthy locally produced food (vegetarian and vegan available). Together we will explore our intuitive, authentic and individual way of expression which can enrich our perception and understanding of ourselves as well as those we come in contact with.

Our sessions will take place indoors as well as outdoors, in the the surrounding nature and the nearby beaches. Workshops are open to all levels. Teaching will be in English and German.

Full details about the workshop and accommodation available at www.pundarika.it

The 3 elements of of our contact workshop – Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement and Bodywork – have and continue to enrich our lives significantly. Through them we experience a deeper dimension of moving and being moved, seeing and being seen, listening and being heard. This authentic, truthful and simple way of expression has helped us so often to understand and accept ourselves as well as those we come in contact with.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
– Deepen your investigation and understanding of Contact Improvisation –

In this three-day workshop we will cultivate our individual Contact Body. You are invited to enter leisurely somatic research, dancing and discovery. With hands on work, games, the skills and thrills of the form, and the unique physicality of The Contact Body we will savor and rock the boundaries between states of allowing and mindful intention. We will focus on the pelvic bowl to become more intimately rooted in our dance and being.

What does the Contact Body look and feel like?
Some Qualities:

  • Pliant strength
  • Supple and resilient
  • Organized and released
  • Limbs that move autonomously from one another
  • Ability to see and move into the backspace
  • A visceral understanding of the spiral
  • Breath that is felt from the ground to the marrow
  • An enhanced capacity for sensation and pleasure
  • … (your unique qualities …)

Contact Improvisation requires a courageous willingness – but never so much as when we dance in the absence of will – those moments when we drop the reigns and, nowhere bound, allow our animal to carry us.

We will explore:

  • Moving from a base of sensation
  • Dancing with a shared central axis
  • Seeking ease in going off balance
  • Finding the spontaneous acrobatics of the form
  • Spending more time in nuance, disorientation, and extended follow-through
  • A greater capacity for sensation, risk, and pleasure

“My greatest sense of accomplishment comes from seeing students increase their capacity for sensation and risk—seeing them dance less with their “ideal” and more with their partner—and the profound gratification of introducing contact improvisation to those who then realize they have found the dance form they were seeking all their lives. I attempt to teach and model that the beauty and reach of our questions, in the end, determine the beauty and reach of our lives.”

Workshop is for those with a strong grasp of Contact fundamentals and recommended for experienced CI dancers.

Two workshops with Jeremie Chetrit (take one or both). The first (From Ambition to Curiosity) is open to all levels—on May 21st from 1-4pm. The second (Flying, Rolling & Falling) is Intermediate/Advanced—on May 22nd from 3pm-6pm.

From Ambition to Curiosity:
This workshop, open to all levels, will explore some of the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation.
We’ll learn how to create a rich conversation by giving and taking weight with a partner, harnessing momentum, gravity and the body’s reflexes.
We’ll learn how to step into the flow of an effortless, pleasure-filled dance.
We’ll slow down enough to listen deeply.
We’ll learn safety principles so that we can be confident taking risks, when we want to.
We’ll sweat a little, as we play fast-paced movement games and learn to take flight.
And if time allows and the group is interested, we may practice performative scores where we can witness each other’s expression in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Come with an open mind, and clothing you’re comfortable rolling around in!

Flying, Falling & Rolling
An intermediate/advanced Contact Improvisation workshop for movers wishing to develop their skills in partner (and some solo) work.
We’ll learn:
- how to lift and take flight safely, fluidly and easefully, using our structure and momentum rather than effort. (Several lifts on the program!)
- how to roll in and out of the ground with grace, efficiency, and care for our joints—both alone and with a partner.
- how to harness the kinetic potential of the fall to move in any direction—even up!
- how to flow in the air, in collaboration with our partner(s)

If paid for by May 15: $35 per workshop, or $60 for both;
After May 15: $40 per workshop or $70 for both
Please reserve by going to paypal.me/NKidman
Hope to see and dance with you all soon!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Katie Duck has been investigating theater, dance and music with live performance for over 30 years. In her workshop, she takes a microscopic view on the role improvisation plays in a live performance combining her background in the performing arts with her curiosity for advances in brain studies, music and movement research.

WHO COULD ATTEND?
Katie can accept students from all performance art backgrounds and professional levels. Her only concern is that anyone who studies in her workshop have a deep interest in the work and is willing to experiment and take risks with the material she offers.

WHAT YOU LEARN?
Improvisational performance breaks the framework of preset choreography and challenges the artist to be the creator/composer/choreographer and the performer at the same time; to be the doer and the observer simultaneously. It is about learning ‘The Eye’: of the space, of the watcher and essentially the eye of work being created.

The workshop is oriented towards building skills of performance presence, timing, tracking and conviction of choice/action. It focuses on developing skills to interpret dynamic space and creating one’s own performance frame. While Katie aims to explore novel and rigorous approaches to body work. The main focus lies in reaching a state of surprising oneself. The workshop will be structured into body work, activity-based sessions, performances and a jam.

Her warm-up and exercises emphasis how the eyes and the ears work in coordination with movement, sound and exposure to gathered crowds altering our perception of time, space, feelings and emotions. Improvisation sessions revolve around the terms pause, flow, exit, choice and presence with discussions articulating play, memory and intuition.

Katie guides the dancers and performers through physical exercises that highlight how the eyes and ears affect movement choices and developmental brain studies about “how we learned to walk”. She extends the workshop toward improvisation sessions by setting a fictional front in the studio space and then declaring this as a platform to choose pause, flow or exit. This platform highlights how the limit of these three choices can already provide the frame for a composition to take place, and that misunderstanding, coincidence, live time, interactivity, messiness, emotions, intuition and inspiration are basic materials in a creative process. These raw materials are integrated with the combined fact that everyone in the workshop group can make a choice.

WORKSHOP SETTING:
Choice is introduced to the workshop group as a compositional reality but also as a means for individuals to elect to participate in the performative or as a viewer and yet remain involved in the process. The aim is to gather the workshop group to recognize that in a creative composition process, time is passing at different perceived speeds and that space is shifting in several dimensions at once. This awareness creates a presence in the space and a compositional alertness.

Her aim is to provide a situation where artists can practice together and grow in confidence toward public performances with an objective to clarify that improvisation not the antitheses of choreography or composition but rather the way choreography and composition can be executed.

The improvisation sessions are given a delegated time frame with an option for the workshop group to shift, drop or lift the space at will. This shifting, dropping and lifting of the performance space places each individual in a position where they need to be to be fully awake or they will recognisably loose the thread of the creative compositional activity in play.

HOW KATIE TEACHS?
Katie has been teaching since she began to perform professionally in the mid 70’s. She is dedicated to how process and research play a major role in how one can continue to be artistic in how they approach their life and their work.

Over the past 10 years her workshops have been titled “Improvisation” in order to emphasis her views on theater as a live art form reflective of how she executes her own professional performances. Her research is placed in practice with lectures containing her recent interest in brain studies and film.

She integrates her current research making each workshop completely unique. She draws from her experiences in live performances, music collaborations, as a director and choreographer.

Her enthusiasm for a young artists to be able to continue their practice, in a very different atmosphere than when she began her work, is evident in how she has continued to up grade her life style with new technologies, continued to do research in the sciences, the performance arts and music. She has created several projects with an aim to support a young artists rather than her own career. She continues to take risks with her own career in the support of young artists giving them the possibility to experiment within their own practice.
She promotes to her students that the mental connection to the practice of improvisation can be accessed weather they are doing set or open framed performance pieces and that the definitions of what improvisation within art practices mean today need to be reflective to advances in brain-studies and technology.

In the way she communicates with students, one is aware of how she understands that the professional field of the arts has altered drastically in comparison to when she began her practice in the mid 70’s. As part of her teaching, she encourages young artists to devise strategies that allow for them to sustain the production of their work with creativity and research involved and yet survive.

RESEARCH MATERIAL:
Katie has had the possibility to create material for her workshops out of a wide range of practice in the performance arts. She has never formulated her teaching material into a frozen body of knowledge. She does not believe that the accumulation of knowledge is how one becomes a teacher. She believes that It is out of her practice and the practice she witnesses with a student that all knowledge becomes clarified in the lessons she leading.

QUOTES KATIE DUCK:
“The combination of moving, seeing, hearing, feeling and deliberately volunteering to expose myself in front of an audience alters my perception of time, space and emotions. What I do for a living is an induced neuron madness”

“I am not interested in the moment even though it does feel good. I am interested in movement and the fact that time is passing. It is a kind of hippie hype to encourage someone to be in the moment.”

“A fully awake body is rarely pedestrian. The body awake needs to be discovered and demands a discipline beyond everyday tasks. And yet when I see movement that does not respect the beauty of the body as pedestrian I become uncomfortable. How the body works and how I see a body is not so different an activity in how I feel. To not respect the body as an already perfect place of motion is like watching a dog trying to learn ballet.”

Peaceable Barn, Redding, CT USA

This workshop offers specific explorations in Contact Improvisation and embodied mindfulness practices, guiding us toward fully engaged presence. Whether you are brand new to C.I. or mindfulness practices or a long time practitioner, engaged presence and embodied action are available to all of us. We will draw on meditation, Body Mind Centering, Authentic Movement and visualizations as we move in and out of solo and partner dancing. Our mindfulness practice will enhance our fluency with important CI skills, such as refining our sensitivity in listening and responding to touch, following the point of contact, giving and receiving weight with ease and using momentum.

Cultivating presence allows us to be open in any moment to an infinite number of choices in the dance. For those new to CI, you will be supported to listen deeply to your whole body self as you attune to your partner, creating the ground for delicious dancing, based in listening, awareness and spontaneous action.
For those of us who have practiced CI for years we can become habituated to particular choices and find ourselves unconsciously swimming in the same pattern, body system or tempo. This series will help us recognize that a multitude of choices are available at any moment, allowing a whole new world of experience to emerge.

Alicia Grayson has been passionately involved with dancing, teaching and performing CI for the past 27 years. She has taught contact improvisation as an adjunct faculty at George Washington University, University of Denver, Naropa University and Shenandoah University. She teaches CI, yoga and pilates classes in Boulder and regularly travels nationally and internationally to teach. Her long time practices of authentic movement, yoga and meditation are important influences on her dancing and teaching. She is a certified Hakomi Therapist and Perinatal Somatic Therapist. She delights in exploring and discovering new depths to contact improvisation and related disciplines and is particularly interested int he intersection of physics and expression and the mind/body relationship.

THE EGG Greece, Avlaki / Kalamourida, Ikaria, Ikaria 83302, Greece

With Katri Luukkonen and Hugh Stanier

Look forward to a Contact Improvisation holiday with Greek flair in the middle of gorgeus landscape and a dance floor directly in front of the sea.
During this retreat we wish to offer you diverse taste of our favourite ingredients of Contact Improvisation and dance.

Slowing down, and sinking deeper to ourselves. Breathing, arriving with soft floor-work and bodywork/massage-inspired material into more dynamic exchanges. We will approach the core principles of Contact with a relaxed and playful attitude.

Beginning with basic Bodywork techniques we will move into individual floorwork, partner rolling and then gradually building up to standing using the natural spirals of the body. Exercises will alternate between contact and solo work to connect the group as a whole, creating an open, safe environment where participants can feel totally free.

Emphasis will move on to improvised duets where we use each others’ energy to spin off into moments of freedom and individuality, then finding pathways to reconnect with our partner.

The focus of the workshops will be to cultivate deeper awareness of listening, breathing, giving, receiving, timing. Developing our dances from inside out, from down to up, exploring organic movement on different levels. Finding soft strength and support, preparing our bodies to listen and connect with the others, as well as with the space, and our surroundings.

We gonna explore simple tools as sharing weight, support, momentum, suspension, different qualities of touch, impulses, leading and following, falling, spiralling… Playing with our spines and centers. Using our breath to soften our being. Finding effortless and easy ways to move together – finding the flow and joy of dancing.

We´ll also play with energetical space around us – in and out of contact. Creating a sphere of listening with all our senses, touching without touching. Developing sensitivity to read and follow each other in movement.

Price: 299/419/499 Euro including:

• 7 nights accommodation at Karras Star Hotel (Shared Room)
• Additional charge Single Room: 120 Euro
• 7 x breakfast buffet at Karras Star Hotel

During this week participants will experience the lifestyle that we espouse at Leviathan Studio. We will labour for a few hours, meditate for a few hours, dance for a few hours, eat for a few hours and sleep for a few hours.

Labour will be participant directed. If you want to garden, there is gardening that needs to happen. If you want to help build a tiny home, we will be doing that too.

There are three meditation times per day of one hour. Meditation is not taught at Leviathan Studio. We practise vipassana in the style of S.N. Goenka.

Self care is the physical practice of undoing the damage that labour can do to your body. Participants will be led in Tai Chi, Yoga and Contact Improv exercises.

The food is extraordinary. Participant prepared mostly organic and abundant.

$425 Canadian includes tuition, meals, and camping or dormitory.

In this 12 day workshop participants will be led through the foundation exercises to Contact Improv including Tai Chi, Vipassana Meditation and Aikido.

This workshop is for all levels. There are many experienced dancers returning to participate in this workshop as the skills are not learned in a day. Tai Chi, Spiral Rolls, Crescent Rolls, Aikido Rolls, are all skills that everyone should practise regularly. These skills will make anyone a better Contact Improv dancer.

Vipassana Meditation is not taught at Leviathan Studio. Participants are expected to endeavour to be quiet and still. Napping or sitting quietly in the forest is welcomed. Coffee and conversation is discouraged. We sit for one hour, three times per day.

There are two dance classes per day of 2 hours. During the day we practise the skills to get us ready for the evening jams.

This is a well honed workshop. At the request of many previous participants we have made it longer for 2016. There are rewards for effort. There will be plenty of chocolate, but not during valuable class time. Come to play seriously and seriously play.

Participants are well supported with extraordinary meals. The gardens are abundant and local. Eat all the kale you want. Meat is locally sourced and organic, served on the side at every meal.

Mark Young has been studying and practising Tai Chi and Contact Improv, attending numerous workshops since 1997. Leviathan Studio is his creation.

$850Canadian includes all meals, camping and dormitory beds, tuition, taxes and transportation on Lasqueti Island.

Contact Improvisation continues to evolve. We invite you to be active in it’s evolution by exploring the ways in which our verbal and non-verbal communication enhances our connections. Learn to articulate your intentions, boundaries and desires in the dance more clearly and honestly to deepen our connections with ourselves, our partners and our community.
Touch & Play festivals have a history of exploring the edges of what CI can be and are known as events in which personal and communal celebration and growth reach new levels.

The Touch&Play Project started in 2010 as a platform to challenge the practice of Contact Improvisation (CI) as it existed at that time. Through a first festival in Berlin teachers of CI and a range of other body-based practices were invited to explore the ‘Chemistry in Contact’ by inviting in participants’ emotions, sexuality, aggression, politics and everything else often kept out of our dances. The event was a success and the material reverberated around the European and N. American contact communities raising discussions on the boundaries of our practice and the perceived (un)safety of our attempts to exclude our chemistry from our dances.

Successive T&P events have focussed on the exploration of the ‘Edges of Contact’ by working one specific frontier (e.g. the Contact community, children and families) or by providing spaces where all edges are equally welcome. The T&P Project is run as a disseminated network of interested researchers, teachers and practitioners whereby any individual or group is encouraged to voice their own questions or concerns and to create a safe space to have them addressed in an authentic and playful manner.

This year’s theme of Communication takes us into a deepening of the dance through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques, styles, skills and approaches. We aim to bring, explore, and open all of ourselves: the communicator, the sensual, the sexy, the playful, the curious, the powerful, the receptive. Through this wide lens we continue to question the relationship of Chemistry and Physics in this vast expanse of dance we call Contact Improvisation.

MODALITIES & PRACTICES THIS EVENT IS INSPIRED BY:
NVC (Non-Violent Communication), Power & Resistance Play, Conflict Transformation, The Work (Byron Katie), Authentic Movement, Somatic mindfulness, BDSM, Roleplaying, Ritual, Tantra…

OUR GOALS FOR THIS EVENT INCLUDE:
Expanding our range of touch
Expanding definitions and edges of CI
Exploring sexuality in CI with safety & consent
Finding greater freedom & deeper connections
Enriching CI with subtle communication practices.
Bringing these communication tools into our art & performance

QUESTIONS WE ARE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING:
How can CI help us to become more compassionate?
Which of our inner voices do we allow into our dances?
How does CI help us connect with and express feelings & needs?
How to differentiate between intimacy, sensuality & sexuality in the dance?
How to create permission to explore edges while defining healthy boundaries?

Dear friends from France and around the world,

Paris is hosting its second International CI Exchange [RiCI] this summer, from July 7th to 13th, in Japy Gymnasium and Carreau du Temple beautiful venue, in the heart of the French capital. It’s time for registration!!

For this second International CI Encounter in Paris (RiCI Paris 2016), we are hosting a hundred participants: contemporary dancers (professional or amateur) with or without an experience of CI.

A new format for the festival has been designed by the team: each day is dedicated to one activity (intensive classes, or labbing, or jamming) and each night a specific themed jam will gather all the participants in our main field of operation: Japy Gymnasium, a magnificent, iron-and-glass gym at the heart of Paris.

Itay Yatuv (ISR), Ezster Gal (H) and Charlie Morrissey (GB) will be our intensive teachers. Five other (to be disclosed later) will be guiding us in the laboratory effort to research, for each group, specific milieux of exploration within the dance: air, water, sound, gaze and the city. And lastly, two of our jams will be introduced by experts in the way of movement: Boris Nordman, who will offer a « corporeal fiction » as a point of entry to the dance, and Myriam Lefkowitz.

5 days intensive Contact workshop – 11-15 July – in Amsterdam

From Fear of Falling to Free Form Flying

The fear of falling is innate in us, it is a born reaction that everyBODY shares from birth.

As soon as the floor runs towards you, or you run/fall towards the floor ,your body’s reflexes kick in, your muscles tension rise and you embrace yourself for the impact.

Tension rises not from falling but from the fear of it. In this intensive workshop we will learn to see, feel, experience this and go beyond the fear of falling into a different place.

Once the body learns to go beyond this reaction a numerous pathways opens up, and the way to higher levels of dancing is opened – dancing with and over your partner, sliding on and off a body in different heights, and flying higher.

When the fear of falling is gone the joy of flying can be experienced, and with that comes the free form dancing of Contact Improvisation.

In this workshop we will experience and explore how we can learn to override our reactions into a freeform, dancing and extending it into flying.

By the end of the workshop we will see how we will be flying on a partner in a safe way, and how to feel secure and to ride this flow even in a less secure situation, which in the past might have brought our reflexes and reactions to burst out.

In the first two days of this intensive workshop we will practice and investigate how to increase our physical abilities in Contact Improvisation – Sharing weight, different pathways, lifting and flying.

Once we will have our Contact Improvisation language on a higher level we will start to challenge our reflexes and reactions our fears and our tendencies and see what physical sensations arrive.

We will learn to be light as a feather and to land quietly on the floor, we will learn to use our entire body – muscles, bones, joints and connective tissue in order to achieve this not so easy task.

This workshop is intended for all levels practitioners of Contact Improvisation from beginners to very experienced practitioners.

CI IA: UNCOVERING THE DANCE

August 4-7, come to the driftless region of Northeast Iowa for the second annual festival of Contact Improvisation in Iowa! Come jam, study, play, eat & commune with dancers of the midwest. Study with intensive teacher, Anya Cloud, who will teach on the topic of “intelligent recklessness”. With Anya, we will learn to move with care without being careful, we will find exhilaration, composition, bewilderment, and delight to increase physical range, and we will expand the possibilities of what a contact dance can be through intelligent risk taking and by saying yes to what arises. Come dance and connect with jam hosts Blake Nellis, Jane Hawley, Sophie Rog, Jennifer Schmidt, Chrissy Nelson, and Hannah McCarger, all of whom have been inspired and invigorated by the unique dance and CI culture in NE Iowa. This August, we will continue expanding the root system of dance here in the heart of the midwest. We will uncover our unedited impulses, name and expand our edges, and flirt with fear on the dance floor.

CI IA is located in the beautiful studios of the Luther College campus at 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101

Check in for the event will be at 4:00pm on August 4th. The typical day includes: a warm up, intensive class, fundamentals, outdoor time, open jamming and ice cream! We will end the festival with a closing circle on Sunday, August 7th at 12:30pm

Our body is our territory. A vast landscape.
Hills, rivers, bones.
Moss on eyes. Flesh on ground.
Blood running through earth
flowing into the heart
of the land
Nerves caress trees
Heaven breaks
into a singing of birds so sweet
it drips honey on the tongue

Program
In this full week workshop we explore dance in relation to the surroundings. A continuous journey of performance in which our bodies explore inner and outer landscapes. Performative work, research. Contact improvisation in nature, instant composition. The dance will be supported by sessions of bodywork, writing, voice explorations and meditation.

Location
We dance in the rustic studio, in forest and fields, historical ruins and water. And ofcourse the silent green environment of Createrre.

Teachers Johhny Schoofs and Kristien Sonnevijlle
You have the opportunity to work with the artistic knowledge of two experienced performers within the field of improvised dancing and site specific work. Both intrigued by the body in a specific environment and the body itself as a place, a landscape.

$850Canadian includes all meals, tuition, camping or dormitory, taxes and transportation on Lasqueti Island.

nature place around Bern, Breitenrainstrasse 41, Bern, Berne 3013, Switzerland

Our organs are vital and alive. They provide us with a sense of personal self and organic authenticity. Organs support our postural tone and our feelings and give volume to our movement. They are the primary habitats for our emotions, aspirations, and memories of our inner reactions to our personal histories.
Each organ has its own function, its own “mind”, according to its form, place, substance and its role in the own organism.

With Dance Improvisation, voice and movement we will travel through this system at the origins of life and research its physical and psychic qualities. Alone and as a group, we will engage in a sensual and playful approach toward our environment, using our skin and senses as interfaces and spaces to meet.

Methods
Improvised dance: elements of Body Mind Centering, Authentic Movement, Contact improvisation as well as movement meditation, voicework and breath. There will be a big space for playfullness and creativity and also moments of sharings with the group.

No one else combines new music, original choreography, and visual art like we do, and the Fall Concert Series is the one chance this year to see our work performed live by a full jazz band and complete ensemble of dancers.
You will be there for the world premieres of four brand-new works:

- An Intimate Affair – Renowned Chicago choreographer Sherry Zunker collaborated with CRDT co-founder Joe Cerqua to create a sexy new piece that explores issues of intimacy and our closest personal relationships.

- Shiver – Award-winning choreographer Stephanie Martinez and acclaimed jazz violinist James Sanders explore breaking up and moving on in this visceral and emotional new piece.

- American Catracho – CRDT co-founders Wilfredo Rivera and Joe Cerqua took on immigration to America – the reasons people move, their harrowing journeys, and the complicated relationship they find when they arrive.

- Corner Sketches, A Tribute to Miles Davis – Stu Greenspan’s arrangements of Davis’ music combine melodies from his early work and rhythms from late in his career, accompanied onstage by choreography from 3Arts award winner Monique Haley and Marc Macaranas and Raphaelle Ziemba. Chicago trumpet great Pharez Whitted takes up the role of Davis.

Chemistry Meets Physics – The Pleasure of Motion.
A Contact Improv Workshop with Moti Zemelman.

Founder of CI, Steve Paxton, is quoted ‘If you’re dancing physics, you’re dancing contact. if you’re dancing chemistry, you’re doing something else.” Let’s challenge this notion in our dancing.

Investigating the chemistry underlying the physics of this form asks us to deepen our awareness of sensations, emotions and desires that arise before during and after a dance.

Conscious sensuality can be practiced in CI through the art of consent – a devoted listening for the “Yes” and “No” our bodies offer each other moment to moment.

We’ll start by re-examining some of the basic physical principals of CI like gravity momentum & inertia to observe where sensuality and intimacy already intersect.

We’ll work on breaking physical habits that keep us disconnected. We’ll do some myth busting to challenge false dichotomies in the “Dos” and “Don’ts” of CI (ie: don’t use your hands, don’t manipulate, always be in the flow).
Incorporating eye-contact, energetic awareness, and tantric principles we’ll explore being even more deeply present with our partners.

…Another quote of Steve Paxton’s I love is:
“Just the pleasure of moving and the pleasure of using your body is, I think, maybe the main point. And the pleasure of dancing with somebody in an unplanned and spontaneous way, when you’re free to invent and they’re free to invent and you’re neither one hampering the other – that’s a very pleasant social form!”

Whether you are new to CI or a seasoned dancer this workshop will offer new skills and ways to enter the dance.

In this workshop you can discover the magic of improvisation in a liquid element.

The warm water invites you to let go and to experiment in an organic and fluid way of moving. You learn how to play with its resistance and dynamic, how to transition between following the waves and making soft and clear propositions.

Explorations are based on listening and perception and we learn to compose with the unexpected. Our body becomes a fluid moving support, inviting our partner(s) to ride on waves created by the common momentum.

When we let the physical forces such as friction, buoyancy or inertia lead us and take us into the unknown.

As no one decides where to go, we engage deeply in a nonverbal communication, where we listen to the dance and where it wants to grow in the present moment.

You will dance following several improvisation principles and learn ways to offer a good and safe support in movement. On land you also learn how to let yourself fall into motion and how to stay in graceful flow. There will be lots of space for duets and group dance, in music or in silence.

Over the two day weekend we will spend two sessions in the studio and two sessions in a Hydro therapy pool 34 deg.

£100 paid in full by the 5/6 November

£115 after 10th October

CONTACT IMPROVISATION BASED ON TANTRA
Workshop with SABINE SONNENSCHEIN
November 5th – 6th, 2016

Through tantric approach and techniques, Contact Improvisation (CI) becomes a tantric practice, a holistic and spiritual dance experience.

We will focus on creating energy in the body and directing it in the body through breathing practices.

We will create energetic fields in space. How do you in dancing become closer at being one with the soul of the space, the world or the universe? Expanding into the space you may experience oneness, you may experience Samadhi.

You dance as a unit of body, soul, spirit and mind. Love energy and sexual energy are not excluded, but used to evoke deeper awareness and to nourish your dance.

For everyone with experience in CI plus in meditation.

What is Touch & Play?
Successive T&P events have focussed on the exploration of the ‘Edges of Contact’ by working one specific frontier (e.g. the Contact community, children & families, embodying intimacy) or by providing spaces where all edges are equally welcome. The T&P Project is run as a disseminated network of interested researchers, teachers and practitioners whereby any individual or group is encouraged to voice their own questions or concerns and to create a safe space to have them addressed in an authentic and playful manner.
Contact Improvisation continues to evolve. We invite you to be active in it’s evolution by exploring the ways in which our verbal and non-verbal communication enhances our connections. Learn to articulate your intentions, boundaries and desires in the dance more clearly & honestly to deepen our connections with ourselves, our partners and our community.

Might the heart of movement be in our spines? Still retaining the fluid qualities of moving through the oceans, as much as being a springy and buoyant support on land, our innermost self extends from the brain into the craniosacral fluid and out toward the skin. Far from being a mechani- cal stabilization device we could consider it connected to us as if it were an organ.

And what happens if we dissolve all the bones? We are still left with a soft spine! … a necklace made up of many joints that we can more fully explore when we move from land into the water – an organic shape that we then bring back to the dance of our vertebrae. It’s as if we could once again grow a spine, and evolve it into our dance.

We propose a movement journey that starts on the ground of a studio. We then shift into a pool, spinning into anti-gravity and move into deeply fascial, pre-vertebrate dances. The warm water invites you to let go and to experiment an organic and fluid way of moving. Back on land, you finally bring back the support of the skeletal spine, you let yourself fall and move in graceful flow, falling into motion.

We move solo – we assist and partner each other’s solos and open finally to group improvisation, in water and on land.

The transition on the floor will let you experience the fluidity connected to gravity and gives you the chance to deal with the natural force of water and earth.

Conscious touch is practiced in CI through the art of consent – a devoted listening for the “Yes” and “No” our bodies offer each other moment to moment.

We’ll start by examining some of the basic physical principals of CI like gravity, momentum & inertia to observe where sensuality, intimacy and physical principles already intersect.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: https://vimeo.com/103231069

ANIMAL INSTINCT is an ongoing movement research. The core of this practice is to gain freedom in motion. By moving away from any ideology, style, form or aesthetic, we can reexamine our physical abilities with fresh eyes. The work refers to information from various movement disciplines (biomechanics, martial arts, somatic practices, contemporary dance & contact improvisation) and offers a wide spectrum of tools to study our body, to understand movement and communicate physically.

ANIMAL INSTINCT offers natural movement patterns to create rich duets based on improvisation. This workshop will help developing the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence to provide dancers with the agility and coordination to complete the movements successfully. We will work on partnering exercises to expand our personal movement vocabulary and our ability to physically communicate in a duet.

TOPICS we will explore/study:
- Body preparation (warm-up/cool-down)
- Physical Adaptation
- Flexibility and movement fluidity
- Undulation and spiral patterns
- Muscle tonus
- Hands as feet and feet as hands
- Reflexive awareness
- Structural limitations & manipulation
- Freedom in expression
We will work in various constellations (solo, duet or group work), studying the never-ending possibilities that occur in dynamic improvisations. We will re-inhabit our dancing body and emerge ourselves into the flow of movement.

The ANIMAL INSTINCT is a frame in which one can explore his own body in relation to a partner/partners. The starting point for this exploration is the pleasure that comes from bodily communication. We will learn the effect of the physical forces that are around us and how they can be utilized into our partner body and to ourselves. We will learn how to fall, roll, jump, fly and manipulate. We will examine touch qualities and explore our imagination and curiosity.

ANIMAL INSTINCT can be divided into three layers: body preparation, body communication, body migration. Each layer is an independent universe that can exist on its own but is designed to support, develop & complete the other layers. Together they represent what I define as movement liberation. By diving into the world of movement, we can start perceiving ourselves as movement ambassadors, as a reference point to ‚body inhabitants’. It grows into a responsibility, a missionary quest, to bring back our natural heritage to be in movement, to become motion.

BODY PREPARATION
The foundation layer. The work consists a variety of movement tasks/exercises to understand the body as an individual entity. By working with the solo body, we can differentiate, dissect and map the body properties, limitations and potentials. The work aims to establish tools for self-discipline and self exploration of the body.

BODY COMMUNICATION
In this layer the exploration focus is on the universe of physical communication with another person. When working with a partner, we can transform the motivation for movement to a reaction based practice. We are not alone anymore. We are being affected by external forces/intentions and we can clarify our desires and motivations. This layer helps to experience evolution through dependency on another being.

BODY MIGRATION
The last layer introduces group constellations. The exponential increase of the ever-changing variables, confronts the individual to adapt and change constantly, evolving into a state where the speed of our thoughts is equalised with our body reactions. In this frame, one can examine himself/herself through a wider lens. We are social beings and we need to develop skills to exist within a group.

When combined together to a body of work, we can take our heads ’out of the water’ and merge into a wider context: We are living in a demobilized society where movement is being perceived as luxury/hobby and the body is being appreciated merely on its aesthetic properties. By diving into the world of movement, we can start perceiving ourselves as movement ambassadors, as a reference point to ’body inhabitants’. It grows into a responsibility, a missionary quest, to bring back our natural heritage to be in movement, to become motion.

BIO MATAN LEVKOWICH:
Matan is a dancer, choreographer and movement teacher inspired by social phenomena and human behaviour. His approach to movement is based on the study of the body’s intuition. The study of intuition enables to navigate through instability and develops trust in the body’s capacities. His choreographic works explore narratives of body/relations. His main interest lays in utilizing coincidence into stable, communicative scenarios.

Matan started his physical education in Rene Cassin high school for sport. Until the age 18 he was trained to be a basketball player. His first encounter with dance was 2007-2009 in The Group in Jaffa – School for Contemporary Dance, 2009-2010 he studies at The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, 2010-2013 he continued his studies at Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD).

He danced in works of David Zambrano („4+1“), Martin Nachbar (On Foot), Alessandro Sciarroni (Untitled (2) – you don’t know how lucky you are), Marco Torrice (Centipedes), and others.
https://vimeo.com/88329062

His choreographic works have been presented in various dance festivals, cultural events, art galleries and museums. His first choreographic work “Point of contact” was presented in Israel at 2010 as part of the “New dance project” – a platform for emerging choreographers.

A new work of Matan is „Magnesium“ (2014 and 2015) in which he developed a breathtaking tribute to the origins of CI, Steve Paxton’s performance „Magnesium“ that also „combined inner-focused movement and athleticism including wrestling and falling, jumping and rolling“.

As a teacher, Matan’s focus lays in contact improvisation and movement research. He started giving regular classes in Israel in 2008. Since then, he had the chance to teach in different circumstances and to different audiences; from professional dancers to amateurs and teenagers, in open workshops, festivals and closed intimate groups. Currently he is based in Austria and he keeps on presenting his work in festivals in Europe. As well he works as a guest teacher and creator at SOZO dance academy. Psychology of Contact Improvisation with Stuart Phillips

W&M Dance Projects and Contact Improv Calgary present:

Psychology of Contact Improvisation:
An existential foray into why we even do this
A 3-day workshop with Stuart Phillips
Open to all

What am I doing? Where am I going? What is happening now? What happens next? Who am I really?

This workshop taught by Stuart Phillips will explore unblocking patterned responses, making way for more authentically relating scenarios through dance improvisation.
Our approach is intentionally but yet organically shifting our psychological view to more unfamiliar states, ultimately opening our shared dance experience to more poignant
and unknown realms which are extremely satisfying and nurturing.

1. Guidance into where we source from.
2. How we influence our choices in the moment, what is our long range focus?
3. How does viewing perspective of the moment inform outcome?
4. How do we choose this particular arrangement? What can we get rid of to stay completely real all the time?
5. How dance informs and defines our experience, our self identity, our self enrichment.
