NOWHERE BOUND 5-day workshop with MARTIN KEOGH
The Centre for Movement Arts, Bay #9 4005 9th Street SE, Calgary, Alberta T3G3X7, Canada

Contact improvisation requires a courageous willingness – but never so much as when we dance in the absence of will – those moments when we drop the reigns and, nowhere bound, allow our animal to carry us.

Join good company in Calgary for dancing and discovery. With games, some sweat, and the unique physicality of the contact body we will savor and rock the boundaries between states of allowing and mindful intention.

We will explore:
o Moving from a base of sensation
o Dancing with a shared central axis
o Seeking ease in going off balance
o Finding the spontaneous acrobatics of the form
o Spending more time in nuance, disorientation, and extended follow-through

This is an intermediate / advanced level training for those with a grasp of Contact fundamentals

Dates and times:
Friday, May 30 (6:30pm-9:30pm)
Saturday, May 31 (10:30am-5:30pm)
Sunday, June 1 (10:30am-5:30pm)
Monday, June 2 (6:30pm-9:30pm)

Lasqueti Island, British Columbia V0R 2J0, Canada

5 day intensive with two classes per day and evening jams with John Faichney.

Contact Improvisation makes a place for many different kinds of conversation, and in John’s class we will try-out a number of different modes of CI ‘speech’. Some of these will exploit game-like and/or martial-arts-like structures, while others will work both with and against sound. However, we will be particularly interested in duets organized around (1) rolling, contiguous, single-point touch (a.k.a., ‘RCSPT’); (2) the ambiguity (agreement,dispute,open-endedness) of who has the initiative for ‘what happens next’; and (3) particular configurations or qualities of movement which emerge, if only for a moment, as a shared topic for duet partners’ curiosity.

We will be particularly concerned to become comfortable and resourceful with RCSPT. Thinking about CI this way, it is as though duet partners were oriented to ‘writing on’ and being ‘written on by’ each other’s body-surfaces. In fact, it is because of RCSPT that dancers are able to ‘keep up with each other’ – that is, sustain high-quality communication regardless of what the other dancer is doing. From this base, we will seek out the invitation-and-reply that happens when we resist, exceed, and pivot against our partner’s touch trajectories.

In general, we will explore the space between, on the one hand, how CI grounds itself in a process of awakening the body to its own intuitive grasp of movement/touch – its poise, balance, extension, tactility, weight, inertia, and so on – and on the other hand, how skillful CI seems to consolidate itself around particular habits of movement/touch. (Sometimes CI is much like other forms of dance training: some habits we awaken and refine; others we learn through focus and practice.) Our aim, throughout, will be to develop each dancer’s unique ‘voice’: those individualised qualities of CI ‘speech’ which emerge in touch/movement dialogue.

STATES OF GRACE
CI, Contemplation, and Composition with Nancy Stark Smith and Mike Vargas (music)

An introduction to the full spectrum of dance improvisation work that Nancy and Mike are currently exploring using contact improvisation as a base. This will encompass CI technique and practice, improvisation scores (including the Underscore), listening practice, compositional awareness, contemplative practice, jamming, and observing. Through our dancing, listening, and watching, we will study physical and energetic changes of state, natural composition, presence, and relationship—in groups, solo, in and out of contact, in silence and with live music. Please come prepared for intensive practice (6 hours daily) and a little bit of fun! Nancy’s longtime collaborator musician/composer/improviser Mike Vargas will contribute his music and his point of view.

NANCY STARK SMITH first trained as an athlete and gymnast, leading her to modern and postmodern dance. She danced in the first performances of contact improvisation in 1972 and has since been central to its development, as dancer, teacher, performer, writer/publisher, and organizer. She cofounded Contact Quarterly dance journal in 1975 which she continues to edit and produce. Her first book, Caught Falling: The Confluence of Contact Improvisation, Nancy Stark Smith, and Other Moving Ideas, was released in 2008. www.nancystarksmith.com

MIKE VARGAS began playing music in 1959. His curiosity and love of collaboration have led him through many contexts and cultures, from cocktail lounges in Indonesia to New York’s Lower East Side, from cancer wards to the Kennedy Center. He started specializing in music for dance in 1978. He works as a freelance composer across the USA and internationally performing, teaching, recording, and improvising. For the past 14 years, he has been working around the world with Nancy Stark Smith. He has released 9 CDs of his music and is currently on the faculty in the dance department at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. www.mikevargas.net

The wcciJAM is a Contact Improvisation dance festival created by dancers, for dancers. The teachers and organizers work together to create a unique program of practice, research, play and peer exchange that caters to professionals and newcomers alike.

This year’s wcciJAM offers five day intensives by Sara Shelton Mann and Keith Hennessy: two San Francisco artists who have greatly influenced the performance and practice of Contact Improvisation in the Bay Area and worldwide. In addition, there is an exciting line-up of teachers both local and national, experienced and fresh, teaching single classes all throughout the event. Each evening begins with a fundamentals class, providing those new to the form an easy access into dancing and jamming.

A new endeavor since 2013, wcciJAM’s family JAM and workshop every morning offer a possibility for dancing parents to share the joy of movement with their children. Laboratories are a peer led research forum where dancers come together to work on a shared question or aspect of the form they want to study. The festival also makes space for valuable one-on-one study time with teachers.

Sliding Scale Pricing
Full festival, includes lunch and dinner: $290-$400
