This workshop presents practical tools for a way of dancing that is based in a research into how our body functions, how we interact physically with the environment, and how our perceptions and images act through our body to expresses our understandings and desires.

Preparing the body.

The movement of attention
Breathing: it’s location, coordination, and action.
Center and the flow of energy around the spine
Sensations of force and gravity: moving and being moved
Inside simple patterns: rolling, walking, crawling, running, and jumping
Body waves.
Extending the bodies architecture into space.
Dancing

How do we prepare for dancing?
How does our attention and mind effect to our imagination in our dancing?
How do we see objects in space?
How do we read space?
What is an image? What is being an image?
What is ordinary movement and how do we relate to physical objects.
Seeing and being seen.
What is dance? What is culture?
The materials and techniques presented in this workshop are drawn from Anatomical Releasing Technique, Contact Improvisation, explorations in Contemporary Dance, as well as the personal movement research of dancers Daniel Lepkoff and Sakura Shimada. This work is the base for Daniel and Sakura’s creative work and performing practice.

What is the Underscore?

The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith and practiced worldwide. The form includes Contact Improvisation and allows for a full spectrum of physical forms and changing states, often including periods of quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing. The Underscore’s undirected practice affords simultaneously a framework for research, a forum for play, and an opportunity to experience collective improvised composition. Open to all, familiarity with CI and the Underscore suggested. To familiarize new participants, Underscore NYC offers “talk throughs” to introduce the language, glyphs and structures of the Underscore. Stay from start to finish.

Workshop A: BODY of SOUND

WED, THURS, FRI May 14-16 2:30-5:30pm

Where sound meets silence, movement meets stillness guided by Ziji Beth Goren. Join a lively and nurturing time focused on voice-movement principles and practices: How do breath, vibration, toning, rhythms, melody, sound/word/story-play, and touch stir us to our deepened cellular resonance? Choice structures and intriguing prompts inspire new life in voice-movement improvisation. From inner explorations to partnering, sound circles and small composing groups, we find a true way to reveal our unique stories of all dimensions. What unfolds? Voice-movement vignettes, gateways to personal balance, and the ground below horizon and performance reach.

Workshop B: IMMUNE RHYTHMS

SAT, SUN May 17-18, 4:30-8:30pm

Voice-Movement applications with Ziji Beth Goren The Immune System is a nomadic system which includes parts of many systems. How do we reach the core of our immune system through our own voicing and mobilizing? FIND NAME TOUCH EMBRACE SOUND/MOVE How does our fluid-membrane interaction enliven and inform our immune rhythms? What mythic archetypes influence both structural dynamics and emotional immunity? We explore the relationship of optimal health, sustainability, and creative flair within the layers of immune function. Come ready to explore, learn, recognize, and embody this powerful system!

$100 per workshop

NOWHERE BOUND 5-day workshop with MARTIN KEOGH
The Centre for Movement Arts, Bay #9 4005 9th Street SE, Calgary, Alberta T3G3X7, Canada

Contact improvisation requires a courageous willingness – but never so much as when we dance in the absence of will – those moments when we drop the reigns and, nowhere bound, allow our animal to carry us.

Join good company in Calgary for dancing and discovery. With games, some sweat, and the unique physicality of the contact body we will savor and rock the boundaries between states of allowing and mindful intention.

We will explore:
o Moving from a base of sensation
o Dancing with a shared central axis
o Seeking ease in going off balance
o Finding the spontaneous acrobatics of the form
o Spending more time in nuance, disorientation, and extended follow-through

This is an intermediate / advanced level training for those with a grasp of Contact fundamentals

Dates and times:
Friday, May 30 (6:30pm-9:30pm)
Saturday, May 31 (10:30am-5:30pm)
Sunday, June 1 (10:30am-5:30pm)
Monday, June 2 (6:30pm-9:30pm)
Tuesday, June 3 (6:30pm-9:30pm)

$245 – Employed but economically challenged
$315 – Economically comfortable: you feel
you can afford it (support the arts!)
