with Robin Berkelmans (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

In this workshop we will work towards embodiment and better biomechanical understanding of the human body in order to deepen, enrich and inspire our dancing. The body is our instrument for dancing and when we understand the instrument better, we will move with more clarity, grace and ability. For this we will work with the biomechanical principle of tensegrity. This means for our bodies that the skeleton is being suspended and carried by a web of fascia. We will clarify and tune our bodies by focusing on the bones, joints and the (myo-) fascial meridians. The aim would be to incorporate this into our movement and to feel inspiration more easily take us into dance. We will work with improvisations, contact-improvisations and floorwork sequences as a means to discover these subjects in order to imprint our bodies and minds with their qualities.

Robin Berkelmans is a dancer, physical performer, and teacher and maker of dance and theatre. More information: www.robinberkelmans.nl

Robin teaches in English. Translation to German is possible. A workshop for experienced dancers.

«Focus on the dance»: Contact Improvisation and Tango
Moldova, 7-13 October 2013

This year, the structure of the festival is built around CONTACT IMPROVISATION and TANGO:

Both of these forms of dance are exploring the possibilities of physics of the body and the interaction among people. They are based on the improvisation, which brings with it opening of mind and creativity.

The experiences of these two kinds of dance not only complement each other, but also provide the possibility of combining the incompatible: restraint and freedom, listening and determination, clarity and unpredictability.

“… When I dance, I feel the beauty – strength, flexibility, creativity, boldness, sensitivity, humanity. And it makes me feel that I achieve something holistic. " Martin Keogh

We will have 7 days to try to go all the way from training classes to a final integral creation. We maintain our format “Focusing on Dance”: during the festival, we will think through and create video works, performances, which will be presented to the audience on the final day, as well as during the following events in Moldova and abroad.

“Argentine tango is a social dance; charming, friendly, it is more familiar to a mass audience. It has great potential for becoming more open, to reveal your creativity.

Contact improvisation is the interaction per se; it is a dance, giving the freedom to be you, the opportunity to go beyond the usual schemes and ways of understanding the world. This is a dance which certainly gives you awareness and revelation of infinity of your internal resources.

We see these two forms as self-sufficient; at the same time, they have a lot of intersections and opportunities for fruitful interaction, interchange and development together." Alexandra Soshnikova

“Improvisation” also means that every event is unique and is created by energy of the people who participate in it. Therefore, every festival is unique, and, moreover, we want to capture this uniqueness and originality in performances and video works, created in this very place, at this very time and by very you.

Moldova invites you to the creativity and dance space!

Price of participation is 360 euro with advance payment before 10.09.2013 and 400 euro after these dates.

Price includes: full participation in all events of the festival, accommodation and vegetarian meal (3 time per day).

TUNING SCORES Laboratory – Composition, communication, and the sense of imagination

October 22 – October 26
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
10:00 am-2:00 pm

A multi-sensorial approach to the questions: what do we ‘see’ when we look at dance? what do we ‘see’ from within the dance?’ The scores offer inner and outer communication tools and practices that make apparent the ways each of us sense and make sense of movement. A playful and rigorous dialogue-in-action about space, time, movement, and the innate desire to compose our experience. Creators/Performers in any discipline (dance, music, visual art, theater, science, engineering, farming) are welcome.

Lisa Nelson is a dance-maker, improvisational performer, and collaborative artist who has been exploring the role of the senses in the performance and observation of movement since the 70s. She performs, teaches and creates dances in diverse spaces on many continents, and maintains long-term collaborations with other artists, including Steve Paxton, Daniel Lepkoff, Scott Smith, and Tuning Band-Brussels. She co-edits Contact Quarterly since 77 and was encouraged by a “Bessie” in 1987 and an Alpert Award in 2002. In mid-October, she’ll present a collaborative work with Paxton at DIA: Chelsea. She lives in Vermont.
