Dreams & Journeys/ Contact-Tango- Voice/Theatre Project
Javier Cura & Moss Beynon Juckes

29th July until 7th of August, Summer Workshop Residency at Bechyně Franciscan Monastery, Czech Republic

We will be holding our 3rd 10 day summer residency program in the historical Franciscan Monastery, in the Bohemian region of the Czeck republic.

The Monastery is placed in the little village of Bechyne, over viewing the valley of the river Lužnice, surrounded by its terraced gardens and natural landscapes. This captivating environment ofers a special opportunity to focus on our creativeness and self awareness. In a journey through games and physical plays we will uncover the stories, images and social myths our body carries. Flowing into the realm of the fantastical we will re-invent these body tales towards possible utopic resolutions.

The monastery’s volts and chambers will be transformed into chapters of a journey book. Each chapter will tell a tale within the journey developing multiple relations between images, dance, sounds, words and the space. In this way we will create a journey towards ourselves and others. To discover our own stories, through training and game playing, we will use a synthesis of forms including elements from Contact Impro, Tango, Martial Arts, Voice-Music work and Physical Theatre.

We shall draw inspiration from the monastery and the surrounding natural environment and in order to open our awareness to nature sounds, perceptions of space, landscape and the elements.

In the end of the week we will share our work with friends, guests and Bechyne villagers through an performance. This performance is not at all compulsory and each one is invited to participate in the way she/he feels like
The Monastery; some facts about the place:

The monastery is a gothic jewel reconstructed in the 15th century by the Franciscan order together with the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In this way, it is purposely combining masculine and feminine elements, ofering to its inhabitants a symbolic spatial completeness. In the centre of the building there is a courtyard; a symbolic womb from which all living beings and creatures are born. It is surrounded by a windowed corridor with a unique vaulting, which gives it a surprisingly acoustic resonance.

This was the place where the monks used to walk, sing and meditate. The entire building is surrounded by what had been in the past the vegetable gardens and orchards and now are the terraced gardens that overview the river and the valley. The river fows besides the village and into farmlands, and natural parks. The Monastery’s spatial design and its location seem to metaphorically express the nature that is within and around ourselves. It makes it a special place to rediscover our connection to our primordial natural and animal energies and acknowledge our empathy with all that is a alive.www.mestobechyne.cz/english/monastery/monastery.html

The work will be structured as follows:

Opening day Friday 29th:meeting 6pm. Guided warm up and Open Jam from 7 pm to 9 pm Dinner together. In John’s class we will focus on cultivating and refining single-point contact with a partner – that is, on channelling all useful awareness of partner
location and impetus through a single-point touch-pathway. This will
include working-through the difficulties and deadlocks (physical, but also
interpretive) of single-point touch – for example, the temptation to turn
rolling, contiguous touch into sliding or discontiguous or multi-point
touch. From this baseline, we will take-up more context-oriented
tactics – for example, resisting, exceeding, and pivoting against
our partner’s movement initiatives – opening onto a vision of CI as
a ‘both-parties-speaking’ conversation formed out of identifiable
trajectories of movement over the surface of the body. Some of the
exercises will exploit game-like and/or martial-arts-like structures.
In every case, we will re-discover CI as a touch-based dialogue oriented,
by choice, to the problem of taking and re-interpreting initiative in
any of its expressions.

Eryn’s classes provide somatic and athletic tools by combining modern dance
techniques with Skinner Releasing Technique to prepare the physical self to
be available and capable of being carried into a dance by what is present.
Multi-directional awareness, multidimensional alignment, softening and
letting go into states of non-compression and freedom. In solos, groups,
couples and trios, we will harness the power that comes from practicing
suppleness and trust to enable a deepening into buoyancy, risk and playful
celebration of the human body in contact.

John Faichney (http://www.personae.com) has practised Contact
Improvisation for more than three decades, since the form’s inception.
With Anne Cooper, he taught the 2010 Lasqueti Workshop and Jam.

*Eryn Dace Trudell *is a dance artist: producer, choreographer, dancer and
teacher originally from Toronto, now living in Montreal. Experienced in all
aspects of dance creation from the idea to the stage, her versatile career

Trudell holds a BFA from Juilliard and Teachers? Certification in Skinner
Releasing Technique?. She is a an active member of ACI (Association of
Contact Improvisation of Montréal), RQD, CAEA, CDA. She is deeply dedicated

Lotbiniére Harwood, Peter Bingham, Chris Aiken, Ray Chung, Daniel Lepkoff,

STORIA DEL ACQUA: 13th -20th August 2011 Summer workshop Residency & Performancefor the dance theatre festival La Notte Nera , Italy

During the last few centuries Man has learnt how to manipulate water to its own needs, treating it merely as a physical substance devoid of any possible emotional and spiritual value. This utilitarian way of thinking has taken hold of all spheres of life.

The myth of Progress has implemented the desire to attain more and more ravaging water for its bounty. However, “Proft” cannot perceive the vital coherence of all things in nature. Water continues to be the eternal bystander watching us as we refect upon the Myth of Progress.

Is there something symbolic and evident in the consistency and fow of water that contemporary society neglects? Isn’t it Water the universal element that fows connecting the inanimate and the animated world, relating to all the developing forms of living creatures? At last, it has becomed gradually evident today that all these living fowing circulations cannot be destroyed without dire consequences on all what is alive.

In this year workshop residency we will relate the archetypal movements of the fowing elements and the forms which arise through them, with physical theatre, contact-tango and the sounding musical body. We will construct our performance inside our water-world scenography through a diversity of elements going from story-telling, dance, light and shadow theatre, invented alphabets and gestures, sounds, songs and music .

This 7 day workshop will culminate in a spectacle called Storia del Aqua tobe performaed during the “Notte Nera” dance theatre event in the medieval village of Serra dei Conti, in Italy. www.nottenera.it
“Notte Nerra 2011” in Serra dei Conti:” 5th Edition: During the night of Saturday 20th August, all artifcial lights of the medieval town of Serra dei Conti will be switched of. The city will host in its small streets, alleys, piazzas, and museums, a rich variety of spectacles ranging from contemporary theater, to music concerts, flm animation, nouveau cirque, installations, etc. (www.nottenera.it )

This workshop of CONTACT + IMPROVISATION proposes a time of investigation and dance in the intimacy of a studio to deepen our bases of CI, as well as the exploration of the environment, outdoors, to confront ourselves to the visual, sound, architectural and sensory impressions, as we observe our ability to remain opened for the richness of internal and external drives. We will integrate both experiences questioning the relationship to our own body and it’s limits, our partner’s bodies, the group and the space.
