„The Big Picture“ – Dance Improvisation in Performance

This workshop focuses on three systems: Articulating the Solo Body, Contact Improvisation and Ensemble Thinking.

Articulating the Solo Body focuses on techniques for spontaneous dancing rich in detail and phrasing. We will use hands on re-patterning, structures inspired by Trisha Brown’s choreographic structures, and Martin’s ReWire: Dancing States— a system that motivates dance from a Kinetic Body State and from a Neurological (Neuro) Brain State. The Kinetic State brings us to awareness of the body’s emergent desires for movement and the Neuro State allows us to dance the brain and bypass “Mind” as much as possible. We extend these investigations into Contact Improvisation to embody these dancing states as duets and discover new vocabulary for our Contact dancing. Martin’s Ensemble Thinking (ET) creates ensemble compositional sensibilities to frame for our solo, contact, and ensemble dancing.

We will work through the week towards a performance on Friday, February, 11 th, 2011, at 8:30 pm

„I recently read Peter Ryan’s essay “10,000 Jams Later: Contact Improvisation in Canada, 1974-95” and Steve Paxton is quoted saying “I don’t think the idea of composition has occurred to more than two in a hundred of contacters, or composition in the way that dance art uses it.” Articulating the Solo Body and Ensemble Thinking address improvisational composition as a technique and enhances the experience of Contact Improvisation both as the doer and the watcher „

Nina Martin’s choreographic projects have received numerous grants and awards including multiple fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts (USA) and private foundations. She has taught and performed extensively in North America including Canada as well as in Venezuela, Russia, Finland, Lithuania, Austria and Japan. Performance credits include Steve Paxton in the PBS Dance in America: Beyond the Mainstream, David Gordon Pick Up Company, Mary Overlie, Nancy Topff, Simone Forti, Channel Z and Martha Clarke. Additionally she has performed and collaborated with numerous artists including Deborah Hay and most recently in collaborative performance with Shelley Senter and Lower Left Performance Collective at Danspace NYC. Her article Ensemble Thinking: Compositional Strategies for Group Improvisation (2007, Contact Quarterly 32 (2).) gives an overview of her innovative improvisational systems Ensemble Thinking and ReWire: Dancing State. Her commitment to collaborative art making is evidenced as a founding member of Channel Z (NYC), New York Dance Intensive, and Lower Left (www.lowerleft.org). Nina presently is a board member of Marfa Live Arts, which hosts the March 2 Marfa Performance Labs and Dance Ranch Marfa workshops in the Wild West of Texas. Martin is an Assistant Professor at the School for Classical and Contemporary Dance at TCU and is in the PhD degree program in Dance at Texas Woman’s University where her research examines the phenomena of ensemble improvisation in performance.
